Charlie Cobb has volunteered at Good Neighbor House since his retirement from Spring Valley Academy as Director of Maintenance and school bus drive in 2000. Charlie spent 36 years at Spring Valley Academy. His wife Shirley has been a volunteer at GNH since 1999. Charlie and Shirley have been married for 56 years and have four children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They have lived in the Dayton area since 1967.
“I worked with the Dorcas program when it was in Kettering. Volunteering does more for me than the people we help. We see how the other half lives and it’s rewarding to be able to help them. I would encourage others to volunteer-you get more of a blessing than what you give out. When people come back and really thank you for what you have done for them it makes you feel like you have accomplished something and they are the ones who make it the most rewarding. It’s fun to be volunteering with my wife here. We find it rewarding as a couple to give back together.
The hardest thing about what you see at GNH is when you don’t have the things to give out to clients that they need. But when you do have them it’s rewarding and you feel great that you have something they can use.
When people ask me about GNH I tell them that we are helping the one’s who really need help and I tell them where we are located and it’s all free. When people find out we give things away and don’t charge they feel better about giving to us. People like that that their items are being passed along to someone who can really use them.
It’s just rewarding to volunteer at GNH.”
Charlie’s smile and willingness to fix anything at GNH where he volunteers once a week make him one of the most well known volunteers at GNH. Charlie also has a special talent-to be able to drive the GNH van or our truck for picking up donated items. (and he often works overtime). Thank you Charlie for being one of our volunteers!
